Those familiar with Bishop's Waltham in the past, may recall John Godwin's chemist shop in the High Street with a notably low ceiling height.
John's son, Alastair, has been in touch and has generously donated this School photo taken in early thirties and writes of his father, John Godwin (1920-2014) as follows:
Michael
As we are currently clearing the house in BW, I can swing by next time we are passing if you would like to have the school photo (it's quite wide!)?
After Prices my father went to university in Southampton studying pharmacy
On graduation, he was called up and became a Captain in the Northamptonshire Regiment, managed to roll-over a bren carrier and never fired a shot in anger, before ending up in Singapore after the armistice in 1945
On demob he worked at Caffyns before opening his first pharmacy on 5 July 1948 in Droxford on South Hill before later moving to the Square
He moved the business to Bishops Waltham in the late 60's, initially renting from Belton & Hall prior to buying Butts Dairy which remains as the NHS Pharmacy in the High Street today (see attached)
Hope this is of interest?
Alastair
